The Office of Admissions is seeking qualified applicants for programs at all levels. VIU accepts applications up to eight weeks before the start of the following semester. After all application materials are received, students are notified of their acceptance as soon as possible.

Master of Science in Computer Science (MCS)

The Master of Science in Computer Science (MCS) program is designed to give students a solid foundation in the theory of computer science and apply that theory to the practice of computing. Students may choose a thesis option which requires two semesters of study under the direction of a faculty member in which the students gain a deeper understanding of an area of current research.

The MCS program also prepares qualified candidates for entry into PhD programs. Our outstanding instructors are leading industry experts who take a hands-on teaching approach to ensure students are prepared for a successful career in computer science.

Students will demonstrate a broad knowledge of computer science and a focused understanding of their area of expertise. They will apply their knowledge and analytical skills to create effective and novel solutions to practical problems. Student will communicate effectively and work both collaboratively and independently. Students will study computer science from a theoretical perspective including such subjects as algorithms, automata and formal languages. Students will also study computer science systems areas such as computer architecture, networking and operating systems. In addition, students will study application areas such as database and graphics as well as software engineering and programming. Student will be able to apply these skills to achieve key business objectives for organizations.

Possible career path: System Programmer, Application Developer, Software Systems Architect, Computer Engineer, Web Developer, Network and Security Engineer, Chief Technology Officer.

The Scholarship Program at Virginia International University is designed to provide encouragement and public recognition to students who have demonstrated academic excellence. The program is supported by generous contributions from individuals, organizations, corporations and foundations. Scholarships are available for the Undergraduate and Graduate Programs. The primary criterion for awards from the University Scholarship Program is outstanding performance. Financial need is another important consideration. Your accurate completion of the scholarship application form will ensure your consideration for every scholarship for which you qualify.

Scholarship Application Requirements

Application to, acceptance by, or enrollment as student in Virginia International University is required. Additional requirements for individual scholarships vary depending on the scholarship. Students can apply for only one scholarship program. The GPA at VIU is calculated on the student's unweighed, cumulative GPA as determined by Admissions and Records, including the fall semester proceeding the application period. Applicants must submit a complete application packet including all required materials for the given scholarship by the deadline date in order to be considered.
