University of Potsdam

Master of Business Administration (MBA)

The MBA Potsdam offers an attractive part-time programme to study management by setting ones sights on combining practical skills with scientific and ecological knowledge. The modular units of the MBA contain a wide range of general economical methods and tools, which are complemented by selected modular units from the respective area of specialisation.

The basic objective of our MBA programmes is the specific training of the participant’s personal and vocational career goals that are crucial for the long-term success of his/her company. Therefore, all MBA-students receive a broad education in all management-related subjects and learn how these are connected to each other. Beside the examination of various practical issues and situations, we attach importance to analytic and strategic thinking.

The Biotechnology- and IT-sectors are innovative, future-orientated and fast-growing industrial branches. Future leaders in the Health-Care-sector have to face new challenges in the areas of organization and competitive strategies, particulary with new problems like case rates and cost pressure, while there are no changes in the care that is needed. To ensure the long-termed success of a company, the ones responsible for the personnel need to have knowledge, skills and professional qualifications in Personnel/Leadership and Management, both from an economical and a psychological point of view.

For professionals and leaders from these different sectors we developed five part-time Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs:

MBA Biotechnology and Medical Technology (BioMedTech)

    MBA Information Technology (InfoTech)

    MBA Innovative Technologies (InnoTech)

MBA Innovative Health Care Management (MBA Health)

MBA Human Resource Management & Leadership (MBA Personnel).

The MBA-study model is very considerate of the needs of employees and companies. It is based on the Blended Learning principle (Distance Learning, combined with in-class lectures), which ensures a maximum of flexibility for the student’s own time-management. The in-class lectures take place every 2-3 weeks at the weekend (Friday and Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm).

In terms of content, the MBA-studies can be divided into two phases. On one side, all students complete the compulsory courses in general management. Afterwards, they specialise in one of the five directions. In the general management part, the participants are provided an insight into business law and scientific research. Others subjects are business accounting and controlling. They also learn the most important issues about strategic- and Human-Resource-Management. Sales, B2B marketing and business development are also part of the general management courses.

The curriculum and the structure of the MBA-programmes in Potsdam underlie continuous developments and adjustments, to adapt them to the changing demands of the economy. This is happening with special regard to the requirements of companies in knowledge- and technology-based sectors.

About the University of Potsdam

Since its founding 24 years ago, the University of Potsdam has excelled in research and teaching and is well positioned both on a national and international scale. Achieving this under consistently difficult economic conditions speaks for the quality and motivation of our professors, research, and administrative staff.

Now it is essential to consolidate and extend this position. We want to play an active role among Germany’s leading research universities on a sustained basis. And, of course, we also want to take top positions in our areas of studies. This is the only way to attract the brightest and most-talented minds to Brandenburg and to offer them career perspectives.

We are convinced that investments being made in research and teaching today will pay off for Brandenburg in the near future. This is why we actively engage in qualified training of skilled personnel that we urgently need and ensure a rapid translation of the latest scientific findings into practice. It is of particular concern to us to win strong political, economic, and social partners.

When we report about our work here, we do not only want to inform you but also arouse your interest and show connecting factors which improve the density and stability of our network for education, science and knowledge transfer – to the benefit of Brandenburg.

The University of Potsdam is with its 20.000 students the largest university in the federal state Brandenburg. It has five faculties – the faculty of law, the faculty of economics and social sciences, the faculty of human sciences, the faculty of philosophy and the faculty of math and natural sciences – with more than 100 courses of studies in 30 different subjects. Unique is the network “pearls”, which connects the University of Potsdam with 21 non-university research institutes and creates an extensive network for external partners in the context of further education.

The University of Potsdam is a young academic institution at a location rich in tradition – a place associated with Voltaire’s and La Mettrie’s ideas of Enlightenment as well as scientific research in the nineteenth century. The UP views internationalization as an integrated part of its overall strategy and as a cross-sectional task that is managed by the University’s administration and supervised by the Advisory Board of Internationalization. The process of internationalization contributes to further enhancing quality and competitiveness in research, teaching and studying at the University of Potsdam. It also promotes an international mindset, intercultural exchanges, and a welcoming culture on the University’s campuses. Eventually this will make the University of Potsdam more visible and attractive in a European and global context.
